Urban Ecologists

Over the last few years our Monday afterschool club (Eco carers) has been evolving. We have become more involved in maintaining our raised beds, which are situated on the far side of the science block; we are trying to become more sustainable! As a result of this change we decided that it was time for a new name for our club, so we have relaunched this year as Urban Ecologists or UrbanEco for short. Our aim at UrbanEco is “to develop and work on a wide range of different environmentally themed projects and activities and have fun while doing so”. What have we done already this year? At the end of last year we planted several rhubarb plants which meant that we had plenty growing in our raised beds when we returned back to school in September so we harvested it and used it to make rhubarb crumbles. Mrs Farris kindly let us use her Home Economics room one Monday afternoon and using what limited culinary skills we had we made several delicious rhubarb crumbles that we could take home to eat. Rhubarb was not the only thing that we planted last year. When we returned to school in September after our summer break our raised beds were overflowing with a wide range of vegetables including broad beans, runner beans, leeks, lots of raspberries and potatoes. We also had lots of things growing in the greenhouse, including chilli’s tomatoes and peppers. Every Monday we all go home with our pockets filled with produce that we have grown and can then use at home. From November to March we were busy clearing our raised beds and preparing for the planting of our winter vegetables such as onions, cabbage and broccoli to name just a few. We have also planted hedging around our raised beds to give them shelter from the elements. What things do we have planned for the rest of this year and next year? Continuing work on our raised beds. Harvesting more produce and eating it! Environmental arts and crafts e.g. making our own bird boxes, making grassheads etc. A bug hunt for junior school pupils Nature walks Visit to the zoo If you have been interested or intrigued by any part of this article, why not come along and try out UrbanEco.
