U12 XI

2012 - 2013

The Under 12 Cricket team had very little previous experience of the game and therefore many weeks were spent pre season coaching the basics of batting, bowling and fielding. The boys’ enthusiasm for learning the new skills was evident from the start and this made it an enjoyable task. Often there is no better place to learn than in a game environment and the boys made their Grosvenor debuts against Wallace High School in mid April. Bowling was always going to be our strongest skill and so it proved with Jordan Brown, Peter McCreery and Noel Shaji performing extremely well. Chasing 106 runs for victory only Jordan and Peter reached double figures as batting proved much more difficult as they slowly came to terms with the fact that keeping the ball on the ground was going to give them a greater chance of survival at the crease. Batting continued to be our downfall against Campbell College, Friends School Lisburn, despite a creditable 17 from Jack Keenan, and Down High School.

The first round of the cup saw Grosvenor drawn away to Lurgan Junior High School, a hot bed for cricket in the country and therefore it was going to take a mammoth effort by all to secure a passage to the second round. Lurgan batted first and with some excellent fielding Grosvenor restricted Lurgan to 92 runs. Zac Clark proved a handful with a superb bowling spell that only yielded 15 runs. In response, Jordan Brown nearly played the innings of a lifetime, plundering 45 runs including 3 sixes, no mean feat for a first year pupil. He unfortunately ran out of partners as Grosvenor fell agonisingly short by 6 runs. This result proved however, that great strides were being made and hopefully our first win of the season was not too far away.

That illusive victory came three weeks later against Ballyclare with Peter McCreery scoring a quick fire 40, Mark Crooks, 13, and Adam Blair, 12, all contributing to the team score of 82. Thereby, followed the find of the season as James McMaster bowled with pace and accuracy to take two early Ballyclare wickets and mount some pressure on them before Joss Weston wrapped up the innings with two wickets on his debut for the school. The boys took great pride in this their first victory and it was reward for all their hard work to date.

The season finished with one more victory over Carrick Grammar and again Peter McCreery scored heavily with 41 to help Grosvenor chase down the small target of 58. A great bunch of boys who showed a willingness to learn and commit to school sport, something that will hopefully continue as the years unfurl. It is in turn, vitally important, that they can find a local club that will continue to help them develop and we look forward to further improvements next year. Those that represented the Under 12 Cricket team throughout the year were as follows:- Jordan Brown, Peter McCreery, Jack Keenan, Andrew Lawrie, Jason Cupples, Mark Crooks, Ryan Grieves, Adam Blair, Josh Harvey, James McGrath, James McMaster, Ryan Blair, Noel Shaji, Zac Clark, Joss Weston, Adam Francey, Garrett Robinson.
