District Intermediate and Senior Athletics Championships

Congratulations to a number of Grosvenor’s talented athletes who achieved success at the County Down Minor and Junior Age Group District Championships, held at The Mary Peters Track on Wednesday 1st May.

At Intermediate level Deborah Stewart was placed third in the girls’ shot while a number of notable performances were delivered on the boys’ team, with Matthew Hedley achieving victory in the Triple Jump, Adam Wilson and Gareth Thompson placing second in the 100 metres and 200 metres respectively, Daniel Mayhew and Chris Allen finishing second and third in the discuss and the 4 x 100 metre relay team achieving first place in a time of 46.18 seconds.

At senior level both the boys’ and girls’ teams enjoyed incredibly successful days:  in the girls’ events Naomi Campbell secured a sprint double in the 100 and 200 metres, followed home in each event by teammates Anna Lockhart and Holly Dornan.  Elsewhere Lisa Black and Karen O’Hare achieved victory in the Hammer and Javelin respectively, Anna Lockhart secured the long jump title followed closely by third placed Claire Todd, and Nicole Muirhead, Chloe McMaster and Emma Larmour each finished second in the 400 metres, 800 metres and Triple Jump events. Finally, rounding off a day of outstanding achievement, Karen O’Hare (second, Hammer), Jenny Shaw (third Javelin) and Rachel Cullen (third, Dicsuss) each secured individual placings while the 4 x 100 metres relay team achieved a comfortable victory in a time of 52.57 seconds.

Determined not to be outshone by the girls, impressive performances on the boys’ team included Andrew Wright’s victory in the 1500 metres backed up by a second placed finish in the 800 metres, Matthew Allen’s first place in the hammer, Darren Loughlin’s second places in both the long and triple jumps, Karl McLean’s third place in the 400 metre hurdles and the 4 x 100 metre relay team’s second place finish

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s athletes who competed so well on the day, as well as their coaches Mrs Karen Kirk, Mrs Charlene Hunter and Mr Andrew Gibson who have worked so hard with them throughout the season.

We wish Grosvenor’s qualifiers the best of luck for the Ulster Schools’ Championships, which take place at The Antrim Forum on Friday 17th and Saturday 19th May.
