Annual Rugby Awards Dinner

On the evening of Wednesday 26th March Grosvenor Grammar School’s Rugby Club was delighted to welcome Ulster star Sean Doyle as guest-of-honour at its annual end-of-season awards dinner, held at The Pavilion, Stormont.

At the event over one hundred players from Forms Two to Upper 6th shared an enjoyable meal before the respective coaches of each team delivered their end-of-season speeches and awarded prizes to the most improved and best player in each side, who were as follows: Best Player – Josh Malcolm (Under 13s), Joss McConkey (Under 14s), Taylor Pollock (Medallion), Andrew Carville (2nd XV) and Sam Purdon (1st XV); Most Improved Player – Jonny Little (Under 14s), Stephen Hedley (Medallion), Jordan McDowell (2nd XV) and James Cartlidge (1st XV).

The event concluded with Ulster player Doyle delivering a short speech to those in attendance, encouraging them to make the most of the sporting and academic opportunities available to them within the School.

The 2013/2014 season has seen Grosvenor’s rugby teams continue to make significant progress; just two weeks ago its Under 14 XV achieved the runners-up position at the prestigious O’Kane Tournament, held at Ballymena Academy, while earlier in the season its Medallion squad reached the quarter-final of the Medallion Shield, eventually losing in a spirited display to, again, eventual runners-up Ballymena Academy.  With this in mind Wednesday night’s awards ceremony provided the perfect way to round off yet another successful and enjoyable season of rugby within G.G.S.

Many thanks to 2nd XV coach and P.E. teacher Mr Andrew White for planning and organising the event.
