Annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols 2013

The evening of Tuesday 17th December saw Grosvenor stage its annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Anne’s Cathedral, attended by hundreds of pupils, parents, past pupils and associates of the school.

As always those present on the evening were treated to a selection of impressive performances from the School’s Choir, including renditions of such festive favourites as “O Holy Night” and “In the Bleak Widwinter” featuring soloists Alice Greeves, Zoe Harrison, Andrew Douglas and Christina Cousins respectively, as well as, amongst others, “Candlelight Carol”, “Silent Night” and “Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day”.

The music provided by the Senior and Chamber Choirs, conducted by Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster, provided the perfect backdrop to an evening of worship which also saw pupils in Forms 1 - 5, as well as Head Girl Chloe McMaster, Head Boy Jack Walker, the School’s Principal Mr Robin McLoughlin and The Dean of Belfast, The Very Reverend John Mann, deliver the Nine Lessons telling of Jesus’ birth. In addition The Bishop of Connor the Rt. Reverend Alan Abernethy, himself a former pupil of the School, officiated at the Service while refreshments were kindly provided at the rear of the Cathedral by the School’s Home Economics Department following its conclusion.

The School's Carol Service is undoubtedly the highlight of an extremely busy festive period for its much in-demand Music department, which by the end of term will also have fulfilled engagements at Cancer Focus Northern Ireland’s ‘Festive Music Night’ at Hillsborough Castle, the Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants’ Charity Lunch at the Europa Hotel as well as Orangefield Presbyterian Church’s ‘Senior Citizens’ Lunch’. In addition recordings from the Choir’s rehearsals for Tuesday night’s Service are set to feature prominently on BBC Radio Ulster’s ‘Arts Extra’ Christmas Special at 6.30pm on Monday 23rd December.

Congratulations to everybody within and associated with Grosvenor who helped to make Tuesday’s event such an enjoyable, entertaining and festive occasion.
