Antrim 6s Hockey Success

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Under 18 ‘A’ boys’ hockey team which secured victory at the prestigious ‘Antrim 6s’ tournament, held at the Antrim Forum on Saturday 3rd May.

Following a series of impressive performances in the group stage of the event Grosvenor qualified to face Antrim Hockey Club in the semi-final of the competition where, despite some difficult moments, the team equalized with only thirty seconds remaining to force a penalty stroke contest from which they emerged victorious by three strokes to two.

This success subsequently secured the team a place in the final of the event, against a much-fancied side from Kilkeel High School. Following a tight contest in which Grosvenor surrendered a 2-1 lead to be pegged back to two- apiece, the encounter was once again decided by penalty strokes. On this occasion a decisive miss by Kilkeel with their second stroke opened up the opportunity for captain Chris Thomson to round off his GGS hockey career in style, coolly slotting home to secure the cup for Grosvenor amidst jubilant celebrations.

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s players on the day, namely: Chris Thomson (captain), Matthew Thomson, David Renfrew, Jonathan Proctor, Jack Anderson and Samuel Bannister, as well as coaches Mr Diarmuid Brittain and Mr Jonathan Young. In a season in which Grosvenor’s 1st XI also achieved a place in the quarter-final of the province-wide Burney Cup, the team’s victory in Saturday’s ‘Sixes’ event served to round off a season of clear progress and attainment for boys’ hockey within the School.

All within Grosvenor now look forward to celebrating further hockey successes from its various boys’ teams next season.
