Antrim Sixes Success!

Congratulations to both of Grosvenor’s representatives at the prestigious Antrim six-a-side Junior Ladies competition, held at Antrim Forum on the evening of Monday 8th May, where each of its teams – Grosvenor 1s and 2s, enjoyed superb success, walking away with some much-deserved silverware following a series of impressive, determined performances.

The tournament followed a league-style format, with Grosvenor 1s – a squad comprising eight members of the School’s First XI team - winning all of its section matches against clubs such as Randalstown, Castle, Donaghadee LC and South Antrim: the campaign began with a 3-2 victory over Randalstown followed by 7-0 defeat of Donaghadee, a narrower 1-0 win against Castle, a 3-1 triumph over South Antrim and, finally, a 2-1 success against their compatriots from Grosvenor 2s. This series of triumphs saw the girls progress to the final of the Junior Ladies Cup, in which they performed impressively to emerge victorious, by 2 goals to 1, against Castle. To win was a fantastic way to conclude a long but highly enjoyable hockey season which has seen the girls collect several 'runners-up' medals, thus making Monday night’s success all the sweeter, especially for those members of the team who were pulling on a GGS hockey shirt for the final time, prior to the conclusion of their Year Fourteen.

Grosvenor 2s, meanwhile - containing members of the GGS 2nd XI – also put in a string of excellent performances to finish joint third on the evening.  Despite the tournament being aimed at club level teams and more experienced players, the girls showed no sign of intimidation and began promisingly, with a tenacious and determined performance helping them to draw 1-1 with Randalstown. Despite losing 2-0 to Castle and 2-1 to Grosvenor 1s, however, another draw against Donaghadee and a well-deserved victory over South Antrim saw the girls progress to the playoffs for 3rd and 4th places where, following an intense, close-fought encounter with Randalstown, the score ended 0-0, with both teams thus accepting third place together.

The entire evening was highly enjoyable - a perfect way to cap a wonderful season for the School’s senior hockey players. Well done to all of the players who performed so well on the evening – bringing some much deserved silverware back to the school as a symbol of the fantastic progress which has been made within it over recent seasons – as well as their coaches, Mrs McIlvenny and Mrs Radcliffe who, as well as Mrs Hunter earlier in the season, have worked tirelessly with the girls during the season.

A full list of the players involved on the night is as follows:

GGS 1s: Hannah Blair (C), Faye Cherry, Lily McCullough, Holly Brannigan, Jessica Sayer, Emma McDowell, Annie McKirgan, Niamh Bell.

GGS 2s: Rebecca McMullan, Jenna Reid, Kirsten McBride, Claire McKane (C), Lauren Moore, Fern Wilson, Louise McAnea, Katie Dowds.

We hope that Monday night’s success will act as a catalyst for further hockey-related success within the school and therefore wait with anticipation to follow the fate of Grosvenor's teams during the 2017-2018 season.

Grosvenor 1s celebrate with the 'Junior Ladies Cup' following victory at the Antrim Sixes on the evening of Monday 8th May.
