AS Politics trip to Q.U.B.

On Wednesday 18th January 31 of Grosvenor’s Year Thirteen Politics students made the journey to Queen’s University where they attended two highly informative lectures relating to ‘The Government and Politics of Northern Ireland’ component of their AS specification.

The first of the two lectures saw Professor John Barry examine Power sharing in Northern Ireland and how this had been transformed by the rise of the DUP and Sinn Fein; providing an extremely comprehensive overview of N.I. politics from 1998 up to the most recent political crisis. Professor Barry’s lecture covered all of the major agreements and discussed potential for the future in what proved a highly engaging and educational session.

Secondly Dr. Peter McLouglin delivered an extremely informative talk on the rise of the two main parties - The D.U.P. and Sinn Fein - offering a most detailed overview of their development and changing strategies/policies over the past 15 – 20 years.

Both lectures on the day were extremely worthwhile and provided excellent revision of the AS Northern Ireland unit, while the event itself gave the pupils a taste of life at university as they consider choices for their UCAS applications early in the next academic year.

Many thanks to GGS Politics teacher Mrs Lander who organsied the trip and accompanied the pupils on the day; we now look forward to the event hopefully contributing towards some excellent AS grades next August.
