AS Politics trip to Stormont 2017

On Tuesday 28th November Grosvenor’s AS Politics students received a fantastic opportunity when they were invited to participate in a tour of Parliament Buildings, Stormont, followed by a talk from a committee clerk who serves in the justice committee.

Following this the pupils were given the chance to meet with three MLAs, namely: Andy Allen (UUP), Philip McGuigan (Sinn Féin?) and Chris Lyttle (Alliance) for a question-and-answer session, during which they asked excellent, probing questions and were highly engaged throughout.

Finally the pupils were afforded the chance to participate in a quick debate, within the Assembly Chamber, on the issue of lowering the voting age to sixteen, with the motion being passed by a margin of 20-10.

The day proved highly worthwhile and helped to bring to life the political environment which the pupils have been studying in class since the beginning of September.

Many thanks to all at Stormont who facilitated the visit, as well as teachers Mrs Lander and Mr Brunt who organised the trip and accompanied the students on the day.
