AVIVA Ulster Schools' Athletics Championships 2013

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s talented athletics team which achieved a number of outstanding successes at the AVIVA Ulster Schools’ Championships, held in horrendous conditions at The Antrim Forum on Saturday 18th May.

Highlights of the day included victory for Andrew Wright in the Senior Boys’ 1500 metres with a time of 4.15.63, as well as the performance of the Senior Girls’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, comprising Nicole Muirhead, Anna Lockhart, Naomi Campbell and Holly Dornan, which crossed the line in 51.80 seconds to also secure gold.

Elsewhere Andrew Wright backed up his first place in the 1500 metres with a silver medal in the Senior Boys’ 800 metres while the Inter Boys’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, comprising Matthew Hedley, Gareth Lammey, Gareth Thompson and Andrew Proctor, also achieved second place in a time of 46.9 seconds.  Finally, adding to the medal count were the bronze medals secured by Nicole Muirhead in the Senior Girls’ 400 metres, with a time of 65.62 seconds, as well as Form One pupils Louise McAnea, whose distance of 7.78 metres was enough to gain her third place in the minor girls’ shot put, and Ben Gilmore, whose time of 13.18 seconds saw him also achieve third place in the Minor Boys’ 100 metres.

Although not everybody was able to walk away with a medal, further notable performances came from a number of athletes who just failed to make the podium, such as: Darren Loughlin (4th, Senior Boys’ Triple Jump); Nathan Chan (4th, Junior Boys’ Triple Jump); Matthew Hedley (5th, Inter Boys’ Triple Jump); Matthew Allen (4th, Senior Boys’ Hammer); Anna Lockhart (4th, Senior Girls’ Long Jump) and Karen O’Hare (4th, Senior Girls’ Javelin).

A fitting reflection of Grosvenor’s collective achievement on the day came with the School placing second overall in the Senior Girls’ team event, while all of its athletes should be extremely proud of their performances in this elite competitive environment.  Well done to all of those athletes who braved the conditions, and in particular coaches Mr Andrew Gibson, Mrs Karen Kirk and Mrs Linda McIvenny who have worked so hard to prepare each of the Schools’ athletes so expertly throughout the season.

We wish all of Grosvenor’s qualifiers the best of luck at the Irish Schools’ Championships, to be held in Tullamore on Saturday 1st June.
