BBC ‘Songs of Praise Choir of the Year Competition’ 2015

On Monday 17th November Grosvenor’s Music department welcomed William Thompson from EMS Audio to the School as its Chamber Choir recorded its entry for the prestigious ‘BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year Competition 2015'.

The Choir’s performance pieces on the day were 'Nearer my God to thee', a traditional hymn arranged specially for GGS by leading contemporary composer Philip Stopford, and the inspirational choral piece 'This is the Day', arranged by Stephen Doughty, Musical Director of the Belfast Philharmonic Choir.

In addition the School was most grateful to Gail Evans, official accompanist of the Belfast Philharmonic Choir, for accompanying the choir throughout both pieces.  As always the professionalism of Mr Thompson, himself a former choral scholar of King's College Cambridge, in recording the CD was also much appreciated.

Grosvenor’s Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster will be collecting the finished CD this week before posting it to the BBC for the judging panel to scrutinize. The School will hear in the New Year whether flight tickets need to be booked for the televised Semi-Final round of the BBC Competition.

Well done to all who helped to make Monday’s recording such a success and we hope that the Choir can emulate the School’s 2013 success, when it achieved the runners-up position in the nationwide Grand Final of the competition.
