BBC Songs of Praise Senior School Choir of the Year Competition 2014

On Thursday 14th November Grosvenor’s Music department welcomed William Thompson from EMS Audio to the School as its Chamber Choir recorded its official entry for the highly prestigious BBC ‘Songs of Praise UK Senior School Choir of the Year Competition 2014’.

The recording, which took place in the William Moles Hall, saw the Choir perform a rendition of ‘Nearer to My God Than Thee’, arranged especially for the School by Philip Stopford, as its Traditional Piece, as well as ‘This is the Day’, this time arranged specifically by Stephen Doughty, as its Inspirational Hymn.  Both pieces on the day were conducted by Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster, accompanied by fellow Music teacher Mr Jonathan Arnold.

Mr Thompson’s recording of these pieces will now be sent to the BBC’s Media Centre in Salford, England for judging by a panel of professional choral experts who will then select six Senior Choirs from across the United Kingdom to perform in the final, televised stages of the event.

The Chamber Choir 2013/2014 will be looking to repeat or even improve on the success of last year’s choristers at Grosvenor, who not only achieved selection for the televised stages of the contest but finished as overall runners-up in the highly competitive event.

We wish the Choir, along with Miss Foster and Mr Arnold, the best of luck with their entry and wait with anticipation for the announcement of this year’s finalists in early January.
