Belfast Area Hockey Squads selection

Congratulations to Grosvenor hockey players Claire McKane and Lily McCullough, each of whom were recently selected to represent Belfast Schools, in their respective age groups, earlier in the month.

Claire, form four, was selected to the Under 15 Belfast Schools’ Area team which competed in a province-wide competition at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club on Thursday 7th April, following a trial held at Grosvenor at the beginning of March, during which a group of over forty hopefuls was whittled down to a final squad of just eighteen players. This final, elite squad enjoyed three intense, high quality training sessions prior to the Lisnagarvey tournament itself, during which Claire was selected to play both on the left wing and at centre forward.

Lily, form five, was meanwhile chosen to represent the Belfast Schools’ Under 17 team which, again, was chosen from over forty initial trialists and this time comprised just fifteen players. Lily, who represented the team at left back, played particularly well throughout the Lisnagarvey tournament and was unfortunate that her team did not prevail as winners of the event, ending up in second place but losing out only on goals scored to overall victors the North West.

Well done to both of the girls on their impressive selection to these elite squads, as well as their coaches Mrs Charlene Hunter, Mrs Linda Knox and Mrs Lynda McIlvenny who have nurtured their talent so successfully throughout the season.
