'Big Bang' Success 2013

Congratulations to Grosvenor Technologist Gareth Reid, Form 4, who last week secured a double success whilst representing Northern Ireland at the highly prestigious UK ‘Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair’ 2013.

The event, staged at London’s ExCel Centre from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th March, saw over 450 projects displayed by entrants from across the UK as in excess of 40000 visitors attended throughout the four days.  Despite the extremely high standard of this year’s competition Gareth’s ‘Write to Read’ project - an iphone app capable of photographing written text and presenting it on screen in a bespoke font, created by Gareth himself, which is more easily processed by dyslexic readers, helped him to achieve first place in both the Junior Engineering category, for which he received £1000, as well as the ‘CREST Creativity Award’, for which Gareth and his School each received £500.

Gareth’s invitation to compete at this elite competition came after he achieved first place in the ‘Software4Schools’ category and runner-up in the ‘Young Engineer for Britain’ category at the province-wide ‘Sentinus Young Innovators’ Awards’, held at the Odyssey last June.  What is more his success at this event is the second in successive years for Grosvenor’s Technology and Design Department, which last year helped guide Eve McLelland, now Form 5, to the ‘CREST Creativity Award’ as well as runner-up in the Junior Engineering category for her Fire Sprinkler project – designed to aid emergency evacuation from a large building.

Well done once again to Gareth on his outstanding achievements, as well as the School’s Technology and Design Department as a whole, led by Head of Department Mr Sammy Taggart and also including Miss Janine Semple, which has enjoyed unprecedented success at provincial, national and international level over the last two years.

We wish Gareth, as well as Grosvenor’s many other talented Technologists, the best of luck for future competitions during the remainder of this year as well as in years to come.
