Boys’ Hockey – Ulster Schools’ Under 16 Selection

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Matthew Vincent who was recently selected onto the Ulster Schools’ Under 16 Hockey squad, which is due to tour Scotland later in the month.

Despite still only being in Year Eleven, Matthew was a regular in Grosvenor’s 1st XI over the past season where he began by playing at right-back before moving to centre midfield, where he played the majority of his matches. Despite playing, on many occasions, again players three years older than himself, Matthew equipped himself well and more than held his own in such formidable company; his performances improved as the season progressed and, as a result, he was selected to train with the Ulster Training Development squad.

Following Matthew’s elevation to this squad his technical ability came to the fore and this, combined with increased determination and application, saw him embrace the challenge and make a place on the Ulster squad his own.

This is the first time since 2000 that a hockey player from Grosvenor has secured selection to an Ulster squad: it is a fabulous moment for Grosvenor Hockey and all within the School, and particularly Matthew’s coaches – Mr Young and Mr Brittain -  are extremely proud of his achievement.

It should be noted that two of Matthew’s GGS teammates - Andrew Hagen and Connor Morrison - made it to the fringes of the Ulster team and, in fighting for their places, helped Matthew get the most out of himself and secure his spot in the final squad.

Well done to Matthew on this impressive achievement and we look forward to seeing him inspire Grosvenor’s 1st XI to many memorable performances next season.
