British and Irish Junior International Mountain Running Championships 2016

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupils, and siblings, Aaron and Joel Harrison, each of whom were recently selected to represent Northern Ireland at the prestigious British and Irish Junior International Mountain Running Championships, held in The Lake District on Saturday 17th September.

Competing in the Under 17 Men’s category Joel, Form Four, was required to run some 3000 metres up Skiddaw Mountain in a race which incorporated a 600 metre climb. Despite this testing environment, however, Joel competed commendably to finish 3rd within the N.I. team, and 31st overall, in a race featuring the top mountain runners from across the United Kingdom.

In the Under 20 men’s race, meanwhile, Aaron, Year Thirteen, competed over a distance of 5000 metres, including a 900 metre climb, with many stages featuring an incline of greater than 30%. As with Joel, Aaron again performed admirably to finish 3rd within the Northern Irish team as well as 25th overall.

As commendable as the performance of both pupils were in their own right, they are made all the more impressive by the fact that both Aaron and Joel have two years still remaining within each of their respective age groups, meaning that they were competing against runners up to two years older than them in this year’s race.

Well done to both Aaron and Joel on their selection to compete at this elite event and we wish them the best of luck with the remainder of their mountain running endeavours over the rest of this season and beyond.
