British Youth Fencing Championships 2013

Over the May Day weekend a number of Grosvenor’s elite fencers made their way to Sheffied to compete at the prestigious 'British Youth Championship' Finals. Qualification for this event was in itself a major achievement, although a number of notable performances were recorded by those in attendance.

In the Boys’ Under 14 Foil event Jonathan Little, form two, achieved 5th place out of a total of 74 competitors, for which he received a medal and certificate as a last 8 finalist, as well as direct entry to next year’s event.  Jonathan’s final position ensured that he finished as the highest ranked of all the Northern Ireland foilists while the boys ahead of him were all from the upper end of his age group and so, unlike Jonathan, will not be eligible to compete within the same category again next year.

Elsewhere on the boys' side Tony Eve and Stephen Brown achieved 13th and 28th positions respectively in the  Under 18 Foil event, Samuel Gourley finished 34th in the Under 16 Epee and Jake Wylie and Jordan Williams were placed 35th and 48th in the Under 15 sabre.  Within the girls’ team, meanwhile, Deanna Montgomery achieved an excellent 8th place finish, for which she also received a medal, certificate and qualification for next year’s event, in the Under 18 sabre.

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s fencers who competed so well at the weekend and we wish them the best of luck throughout the remainder of the season and beyond.
