Chinese New Year Celebrations

During the week beginning Monday 3rd February Grosvenor’s Chamber Choir was given the honour of performing at a pair of events, arranged by The Confucius Institute at the University of Ulster (CIUU), to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Horse.

The first of the Choir’s performances came at a reception for dignitaries, held at Parliament Buildings, Stormont on the evening of Tuesday 4th February, also attended by Mr McLoughlin, Dr Rolleston and Mrs Lendrum, while its second performance was at a Celebration Event Concert held at Belfast's Waterfront Hall on the evening of Wednesday 5th February, attended also by Mr McLoughlin and Dr Rolleston as well as Mr Li Ruiyou (Consul General of the Peoples’ Republic of China for Scotland and Northern Ireland) and First Minister, the Rt. Hon Peter Robinson MLA.

At the latter of these events Grosvenor’s Chamber Choir performed alongside choristers from Milburn Primary School in Coleraine, as well as the world-renowned ‘Nanjung Little Red Flower Art Troupe' from China.  In total the G.G.S. Choir delivered three pieces, ‘Happy Stories of Small Town’, performed in Mandarin, ‘Nearer to My God Than Thee, made Famous by the Titanic, and contemporary piece ‘This is the Day’, with the latter two pieces being arranged specifically for the School.  All three pieces were conducted by Grosvenor’s Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster and accompanied by fellow Music teacher Mr Jonathan Arnold

In October Grosvenor was announced as one of eight Confucius Classroom Hub Schools across Northern Ireland in an initiative which will see it develop Madarin teaching to its own pupils as well as to those of its partner Schools – ‘Our Lady and St Patrick’s College Knock’, ‘Lagan College’, ‘Orangefield Primary School’ and ‘Gilnahirk Primary School’.

Well done to Grosvenor’s choristers who performed so admirably at last week’s Chinese New Year celebrations – we look forward to hearing them in performance again before long.
