Co. Down District Athletics Championships 2017

Congratulations to the School’s talented track and field athletes who enjoyed a series of successes at the County Down District Championships, held at The Mary Peters track on Wednesday 3rd May.

In total the team secured an incredible ten gold medals from a range of athletes, namely, in the boys events: Jonny Little (Senior 110m hurdles), Joel Wyatt (Inter 400m hurdles AND silver, 110m hurdles), Nathan Chan (Senior triple jump), James McMaster Inter Boys shot and hammer), Andrew Hagen (Inter 1500 metres steeplechase), John Redmond (Inter high jump), the Senior Boys 4 x 100 metres relay team, comprising Nathan Chan, Ben Stevenson, Jonny Little and Ethan Fitzsimons, and the Senior Boys 4 x 400 metres relay of Conor Kernohan, Daniel Martin, Henry Ferris and Daniel Larmour. In the girls competitions, meanwhile, congratulations are extended to Tia Cashman-Hooke (Inter 80 metres hurdles) and Holly Brannigan (Senior 400 metres), each of whom also performed superbly to walk away with gold medals.

In addition silver medals were achieved on the day by Jordan Brown (Inter high jump), Aaron Harrison (Senior 1500 metres) and Gareth Campbell (Inter 1500 metres steeplechase) in the boys competitions, as well as female athletes Emma Kee (Inter discus), Louise McAnea (Inter shot) and Anna Stanfield (Senior high jump).

Last but not least, bronze medals were attained by Jack Kennedy and Conor Kernohan in the Senior Boys’ 200 and 800 metres respectively, Sophie Larmour in the Inter Girls 100 metres, Ruth Sellar in the Inter Girls high jump, as well as the Senior Girls 4 x 100 metres relay team of Anna Stanfield, Holly Brannigan, Lucy Armstrong and Annie McKirgan.

Well done to all of the School’s talented performers, along with their dedicated coaches Mr Gibson, Mrs Kirk and Mrs McIlvenny, who fared so well on the track and in the field throughout the day, securing qualification for the Ulster Schools’ Championships which are due to be held at the Antrim Forum on Saturday 20th May – we look forward to reporting on many further successes from this event in a couple of week’s time.
