Commonwealth Day Celebrations Event

On the evening of Wednesday 12th March a number of the School’s sporting stars received the honour of being invited to attend the prestigious ’Commonwealth Day Celebrations Event’, held at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.  The event, hosted by William Hay, Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, was staged to celebrate Northern Ireland’s involvement in the Commonwealth Games and, in particular, at the forthcoming Games which will be held in Glasgow this summer.

Speakers included judo star Mark Montgomery - Northern Irelands’ flag bearer at the previous Games in Dehli in 2008, as well as World Champion cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel, who has also been an Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medalist.

Grosvenor was represented on the evening by Head of Sports Studies Mr Kyle McCallan MBE, as well as a number of pupils who represented a range of sports with the school, namely: Sam Purdon (Rugby/Sailing), Jamie McMullan (Rugby), Aaron Johnston (Cricket), Shane Johnston (Athletics), John Gibson (Football), Chloe McMaster (Hockey), Karen O'Hare (Netball / Girls’ Rugby), Emma Ludlow (Table Tennis) and Rachel Cullen (Hockey/Netball).

The evening proved highly worthwhile for those in attendance and will hopefully inspire them to maximize their talents in each of their respective sports over the years to come.
