'Concern' Debating Programme vs Rathmore Grammar School

Congratulations to the School’s Senior Debating team which performed impressively in the latest fixture of the ‘Concern’ Debating Programme - an away contest against Rathmore Grammar School - on the evening of Thursday 26th January.

The motion for the evening was ‘Europe is Failing Africa’, with the GGS team of Sarah Bissett, Kerrie Skeete, Ronan Winters and Rose Gilmore adopting the stance of the opposition.

Each member of the team contributed well on the night, with Sarah doing a fabulous job as captain, making some fantastic refutations in her closing statement and, in her opening speech, examining the major successes in the relationship between Africa and the E.U.

In addition Kerrie discussed why China and the USA don't do more, Ronan looked at the failings of the African Union and Rose highlighted the big success stories coming out of Africa whilst also suggesting that the media was at fault in only focusing on the negatives.

Although the team lost narrowly on the evening each member received significant praise from the panel of judges. Well done to all team members as well as Mrs Lander, who has coordinated the team’s involvement within the programme throughout the year: we will find out in a couple of weeks whether or not Sarah, Kerrie, Ronan and Rose have made it through to the next stage of the competition and, should they be successful in this, wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the programme.
