CRED Lower 6th Symposium

On the afternoon of Wednesday 11th December Grosvenor’s entire Lower 6th year group took time out of timetabled classes to attend the 2013/2014 CRED Lower 6th Symposium between itself, ‘Our Lady and St. Patrick’s College, Knock’ and this year’s host School, ‘Lagan College’.

The Symposium is an annual Community Relations Programme project, sponsored by the Department of Education; this year’s event was organised by the Head Boys and Head Girls from each of the participating Schools.

The focus for the Symposium this year was 'Our Shared Future' in light of the recent inter-party talks chaired by Richard Haas.  It took the format of a question-and-answer session to a panel of guest speakers, who included former Grosvenor pupil Gavin Robinson (DUP), Naomi Long (Alliance), Máirtín Ó Muilleoir (Lord Mayor), Joe Brolly (GAA), Brian McLaughlin (Ulster Rugby), Michael O'Neill (Northern Ireland Football manager) and Judith Gillespie, the Deputy Chief Constable.  The chair for the event was television and radio presenter John Daly.

The discussion covered many issues including flags, how sport can help build a shared future and how schools can work more closely together.

Many thanks to Grosvenor’s Head of Physics Mrs Melanie Fox who has been heavily involved in the running and coordinating of the Symposiums over the past three years – this year’s forum proved particularly successful and we look forward to the successful continuance of such gatherings over the coming years.
