Cricket – Schools’ Cup Quarter Final

Commiserations to Grosvenor’s 1st XI cricket team which fell to defeat at home to Down High School in the quarter final of the Ulster Bank Schools’ Cup on Monday 26th May.

Bowling first the team allowed the opposition to reach an above-par total of 144 for the loss of five wickets from their allotted 25 overs.  Adam Skelton proved the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-14 from 5 overs but on the whole the team’s display was not economical enough, allowing Down High to set an imposing target that would ultimately prove beyond the Grosvenor batsmen.

Chasing 145 for victory GGS never looked like realistically reaching their target.  Number three batsman Stuart Nelson ended as top-scorer with 21 but unfortunately none of the batsmen who reached double figures were able to go on and construct a really meaningful innings; in the end the run chase ended somewhat underwhelmingly as the hosts were bowled out for 92 off just 21.1 overs.

Well done to Down High on their well deserved victory and hopefully GGS can get back to winning ways over the remainder of the season. In particular, the boys should be grateful to coaches Kyle McCallan, Andrew White and Jonathan Young, without whose dedication they would not have had the opportunity to perform so successfully over recent years.
