Cricket - Schools’ Cup Victory

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s 1st XI cricket team which secured victory away to Royal School Armagh in the second round of the Ulster Bank Schools’ Cup on the afternoon of Wednesday 14th May.

Bowling first Grosvenor’s attack produced a disciplined collective performance to restrict the opposition to 80 for 8 off their allotted 20 overs.  The regular fall of wickets helped to restrict R.S.A’s momentum as Craig Irvine (2-13), Stuart Nelson (3-11), Mark Johnston (3-18) and Gareth Thompson (1-1) struck, ably supported by Mark Vincent (0-18) and Gareth Lammey (0-17).

Setting about their run chase Grosvenor were soon pegged back by the loss of captain Aaron Johnston for 2, followed shortly after by Mark Johnston (13). Despite this, however, number three and four batsmen Stuart Nelson (23 not out) and John Gibson (20 not out) quickly steadied the ship, batting responsibly to see the side through to their target for the loss of no further wickets, thus securing victory by 8 wickets.

Much credit is due to R.S.A. for a spirited performance on the day, although Grosvenor deserve particular praise for the way in which they negotiated this tricky fixture with minimum fuss.  The team now awaits the draw for the quarter final of the event, which must be contested by Wednesday 21st May.
