Cricket - Ulster Bank Schools’ Cup quarter final victory

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s 1st XI cricket team which prevailed in a thrilling encounter against Down High School in the quarter final of the Ulster Bank Schools’ Cup, held at Downpatrick Cricket Club on the afternoon of Wednesday 11th May.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Grosvenor made a strong start and sat in a strong position at 72-1 halfway through their allotted thirty overs, with opener Mark Johnston (33) and number three batsman Stuart Nelson (30) setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the innings. From this healthy position, however, the Grosvenor innings soon began to waver as four wickets were lost for the addition of just 32 runs to leave the team on 104-5 after 24 overs. Despite the danger of a collapse, however, the team had number six batsman Ellis Hanna to thank as his composed 22 not out helped to see it through to a competitive final total of 134 for the loss of 8 wickets.

In defence of their total Grosvenor began encouragingly with the first Down High School wicket coming in the first over of their innings as opening batsman Campbell fell to the bowling of Jos McConkey with the help of Hannah’s secure hands in the field. Despite this early blow however, Down High soon rallied as they reached 41-1 off 11 overs, and then 74-3 off 21 overs, in what was proving to be a closely fought contest. Despite some impressive batting from Down High batsmen McCavern (26) and Power (31), however, Grosvenor’s balanced bowling attack was able to produce enough on the day to restrict the host’s eventual total to 115, leaving them victorious by a final total of 19 runs.

In particular, Grosvenor had the tight, disciplined bowling of opener Adam Skelton (1-11 off 6 overs) as well as Craig Irvine (2-10 off 6 overs) to thank for their eventual victory, as the hosts were simply unable to amass enough runs to threaten Grosvenor’s first innings target.

Well done to all members of Grosvenor’s 1st XI team who have helped the side through to their fifth Schools’ Cup semi-final in recent years, as well as coaches Mr Kyle McCallan, Mr Andrew White and Mr Johnny Young who have also been instrumental in the team’s success.

The entire school community now eagerly awaits the draw for this year’s semi-final, in which they will face one of B.R.A, Campbell College, R.B.A.I. or Limavady Grammar School; we wish our players the best of luck for this fixture, which must be completed any time before Saturday 4th June.
