Danske Bank Schools’ Cup Round Three victory

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s first XV rugby team which prevailed in a close-fought encounter against Bangor Grammar School in the third round of the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup, held on the morning of Saturday 21st January.

Entering the contest as underdogs the team took to the pitch on a frosty winters morning and, despite losing influential out-half Daniel Martin in the opening ten minutes of the match, soon claimed a 3-0 lead thanks to an expertly executed Jos McConkey penalty.  Following this both teams defended their lines well towards the end of the half, although it was GGS who claimed the vital try; lock Ben Davidson crossing the line for an unconverted try which saw the hosts head into half-time with an 8-0 lead.

Despite this healthy half-time lead, however, Bangor began the second half with intent and soon turned arrears into a 10-8 lead following a converted try and penalty which set the game up for a grandstand finish. During a nervous final period of the match, however, it was Bangor’s lack of discipline which cost them as McConkey converted a second penalty which, combined with some valiant defensive play, was enough to secure his team the narrowest of victories - by a margin of 11 points to 10 at the final whistle.

Congratulations to all of the members of the squad who contributed to this impressive victory, as well as coaches Mr Gibson and Mr Hunter, each of whom have worked tirelessly with the team throughout the season.

The team now awaits the outcome of a replay between Coleraine Grammar School and Friends’ School Lisburn this Wednesday before learning the identity of their opposition for their fourth round away fixture, due to be held on Saturday 4th February: we wish the players the best of luck for this much-anticipated encounter.
