End-of-Season Rugby Awards Dinner

On the evening of Wednesday 20th March Grosvenor’s Rugby Club was delighted to welcome Ulster and Ireland star Paul Marshall as Guest of Honour at its annual end-of-season awards dinner, held at The Pavilion, Stormont.

At the event over one hundred players from Forms Two to Upper 6th shared an enjoyable meal before the respective coaches of each team delivered their end-of-season analysis and awarded prizes to the most improved and best player in each side, who were as follows:  Most Improved Player – Dan Whitcroft (Under 13s), Stephen Hedley (Under 14s), Caleb Armitage and Zac McNab (Medallion), Andrew Toland (2nd XV) and Jamie McMullan (1st XV); Best Player – Ben Davies (Under 13s), Ben Davison (Under 14s), James Cartlidge (Medallion), Kirk Maguire (3rd XV), Jamie Byers (2nd XV) and Sam Purdon (1st XV).

The event concluded with Grosvenor’s Head of Sports Studies Kyle McCallan interviewing Guest of Honour Mr Marshall, fresh from winning his debut Irish cap against Italy on Saturday, who shared some of his own rugby experiences and advice with a captivated audience.

The 2012-2013 season has seen Grosvenor’s rugby teams continue to make progress; just last week its Medallion squad achieved victory in the final of the Medallion Bowl competition while its Under 14 XV finished as runners-up at the ‘O’Kane Memorial Tournament’, held at Ballymena Academy on Saturday 16th March.  With this in mind Wednesday night’s awards ceremony proved the perfect way to round off yet another successful and enjoyable season.

Many thanks to 1st XV coach Mr Gary Hunter for planning and organising this most worthwhile event.
