Fencing - South of Ireland Open 2013

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Stephen Brown, Upper 6th, who performed with distinction to secure victory in the Men's Foil category at the South of Ireland Open, held in Cork on Sunday 28th August.

Stephen’s outstanding performance on the day saw him go one better than his silver medal from last year by defeating defending champion Conor Nagle by 15 points to 7 in his semi-final before edging a close-fought final by 15 points to 13 over Fergal Martin.  As a measure of the magnitude of Stephen’s achievement, both Conor of Fergal are Irish National team fencers who are ranked in the top 3 in Ireland; what is more Stephen’s victory represented the first time since 2005 that the cup has returned north, with either Conor of Fergal achieving victory in every other intervening year.

In addition Gareth Reid (Form 5) also fenced superbly to achieve a highly credible 6th place in the Mens' Foil, narrowly missing out on the medals despite missing much of last season through injury, while Jake Wylie (Lower 6th) was placed 10th in the Men's Sabre category.

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s fencers on their achievements at this event and we wish them the best of luck throughout the remainder of the season.
