Football - Northern Ireland Under 18 Selection

Congratulations to Grosvenor footballer Callum Byers, Lower Sixth, who was recently selected to represent Northern Ireland Under 18 schoolboys in a series of competitive and friendly international fixtures.

Callum, who plays his club football with Linfield, achieved selection to the squad following a series of trials, beginning in October, with the initial training squad eventually culled to a final squad of 18 players for each fixture.

Following Callum’s selection to the final squad he competed in a series of warm-up matches, against Australia (match abandoned due to snow), in a 6-1 victory away to Guernsey Under 21s and in another away contest, this time against Jersey Under 19s, which resulted in a 1-0 success.

Following these preparatory matches Callum was then selected to participate in the highly prestigious Centenary Shield against England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland; thus far the competition has seen Northern Ireland draw 2-2 with England at Eastleigh F.C. and lose narrowly to the Republic of Ireland by 3 goals to 2 at Ballinamallard.  Fixtures against Scotland, at Comber F.C., as well as away to Wales remain over the coming month.

Very well done to Callum on his recent football-related exploits; all at Grosvenor wish him the best of luck in his remaining Centenary Shield fixtures as well as in his longer-term footballing career.
