GGS Annual Rugby Awards Dinner

On the evening of Wednesday 18th March Grosvenor’s Rugby Club was delighted to welcome Ulster and Ireland star Chris Henry as guest-of-honour at its annual end-of-season awards dinner, held at The Pavilion, Stormont.

At the event over one hundred players from Forms Two to Upper 6th shared an enjoyable meal before the respective coaches of each team delivered their end-of-season speeches and awarded prizes to the most improved and best player in each side, who were as follows: Best Player – Jason Dodds (Under 13s), Robbie Logue (Under 14s), Ben Davies (Medallion), Andrew Carville (2nd XV) and Jordan McDowell (1st XV); Most Improved Player – Izzy Young (Under 13s), Ewan Renfrew (Medallion), Mark Courtney (2nd XV) and Andrew Boyd (1st XV); Runner-up best player – James McMaster (Under 14s).

The event concluded with Ulster and Ireland flanker Henry being interviewed by Grosvenor’s Head of Sports Studies Mr Kyle McCallan, during which he provided an account of his own playing days whilst a pupil at Wallace High School, his favourite memories as a player, advice for young players looking to make further progress in the game and an update on his progress following a brain blood vessel blockage last November.

The 2014/2015 season has seen Grosvenor’s rugby teams continue to make significant progress; just last week its Under 13 XV reached the semi-finals of a prestigious tournament hosted by B.R.A. while the school’s 2nd XV is due to travel to Royal School Armagh in the semi-final of the Danske Bank Schools’ 2nd XV Plate this coming Saturday. With this in mind Wednesday night’s event provided the perfect way to round off yet another successful and enjoyable season of rugby within G.G.S.

Many thanks to guest-of-honour Chris Henry as well as Grosvenor’s own Medallion XV coach and P.E. teacher Mr Andrew White, who was responsible for planning and organising the event; all at Grosvenor now look forward to another enjoyable, competitive and successful season of rugby in 2015-2016.
