Girls’ Hockey: McDowell Shield Final

Commiserations to Grosvenor’s second XI girls’ hockey team which was unfortunate to lose out to Larne Grammar in the final of the McDowell Shield, held at Civil Service on the afternoon of Monday 12th March.

The team’s path to the final came after a victory over Dalriada School, on strokes, in the first round of the McDowell Cup in October, followed by a 6-0 defeat of Cookstown High School, before a 2-0 loss at the hands of Rainey Endowed placed the team into the subsidiary, McDowell Plate competition.

Grosvenor’s place in the final of this competition came following a particularly impressive victory, again on strokes, away to B.R.A. at the semi-final stage on Thursday 8th March, which took them into Monday’s showpiece final.

The end result from the final was a 4-1 defeat for GGS – a score-line which did not accurately reflect the flow of the game in any way; the match was end-to-end throughout, with lots of chances from both teams - the only difference being that Larne proved more adept at taking the chances that came their way.

Although the end result from Monday’s final was disappointing, it marked the end of a particularly successful season for the second XI, during which the team has only lost three matches - due in no small part to the excellent leadership displayed by captain Rebekah McMullan

Well done to all of the girls who have represented the team with distinction throughout the year and, in particular, to Grosvenor’s Head of Girls’ P.E. Mrs McIlvenny who has coached the team with distinction throughout the year, ably supported by former pupil Rachel Cullen whose dedication has also been faultless.

We look forward to following the fortunes of our girls’ hockey teams once again when the new season commences in September.
