Girls’ Hockey – Schools’ Cup victory

Monday 28th November saw Grosvenor’s 1st XI girls' hockey team successfully embark on its 2016 Schools’ Cup campaign as the team achieved a convincing 7-2 victory over near-neighbours Wellington College.

Despite the heartbreak of a penalty-flicks defeat against Larne Grammar School in the final of the Ulster Super League the previous Friday, the team embarked on its Schools’ Cup campaign with renewed enthusiasm as its players aimed to attain some further silverware.

After a strong and confident opening, hosts GGS found themselves 2-0 up early on, although a WCB fight-back soon brought the score to 3-2 in the home team's favour at half-time. Despite this, however, the second half saw the GGS players produced accurate passing, strong defensive play and excellent movement on and off the ball, which resulted in a wealth of goals in their favour. At the close of the match GGS secured a convincing win, helped in no small part by hat-tricks from both Jess Sayer and Claire McKane

Well done to all members of the squad who contributed to this impressive victory, as well as coach Mrs Hunter who was delighted to preside over such a convincing victory just days before the commencement of her maternity leave.

The team will now progress to the second round of the competition, facing Bloomfield Collegiate at home on the morning of Saturday 10th December.

Grosvenor player Claire McKane who played superbly in scoring a hat-trick against Wellington College in the Schools' Cup on Monday 28th November.
