Girls’ Rugby – Ulster Schools’ Cup Regional Finals

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s girls’ tag rugby team which achieved victory at the Ulster Schools’ Cup regional finals, held at Antrim Grammar School on Wednesday 5th March.

In total the team played three matches in its pool, the first of which was a impressive 10-1 victory over the hosts, with Bethany McDowell (3), Annie McKirgan (2), Lynsey Montgomery, Nicole Muirhead, Claire Todd and Chloe McMaster all on the score sheet.

Following this superb start the team came up against Oakgrove Integrated College who, despite having a couple of excellent centres, found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-2 score line, with tries from the afore-mentioned McDowell (2) and Muirhead, as well as Erin Caughey (2), helping the team to victory.

The final match of the pool was against Hunterhouse College, who had also won their previous two matches, making it a winner-takes-all encounter. This was the team’s toughest match and ended in a 3-3 draw, with GGS tries coming from McDowell, McKirgan and Emma Larmour.   Despite the draw, however, which left both teams level on points, Grosvenor progressed as winners of the pool as they had scored the more tries overall.

The team’s opponents in the final, Victoria College, provided a formidable  test before, in a highly competitive match in which the result was in the balance for long periods, Grosvenor prevailed by 4 tries to 2  following scores from Muirhead, McKirgan, Caughey and McMaster.

Well done to Grosvenor’s players, each of whom played exceptionally well on the day, although special mention goes to Erin Caughey and Bethany McDowell who were both immense in attack and defence. The girls were solid as a team and had the determination to win.  Special mention must also go to the team’s coaches, Mrs Karen Kirk, Mr Stuart Smyth and Mr Ben Coard, whose expert guidance has proved invaluable throughout the season

We now wish the team the best of luck in the Schools’ Cup final, which will be held on Tuesday 25th March at Queen’s Pavillion.
