Girls’ Rugby – Ulster Schools’ Cup semi-finals

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s girls’ rugby team which played superbly to reach the semi finals of the Ulster Schools’ Cup during last week’s semi-final round of the competition, held at the Valley Leisure Centre on Thursday 10th March.

Having already defeated Victoria College, B.R.A. and Antrim Grammar during the pool stage of the competition, the team was unfortunate to narrowly lose out in their final pool match to Wellington College, who prevailed victorious by 2 tries to 1 after scoring with the last play of the match.

Despite this defeat, however, the team still achieved qualification for the semi-finals - thanks to their impressive number of tries scored - where they were pitted against Ballylare High School. After falling 2-0 down early on the team soon rallied to bring the scores level by then end of the second half, only to eventually lose the match by 4 tries to 2 following two BHS tries in extra-time.

Despite this eventual disappointment this was still a fantastic result for the GGS girls as they didn't expect to get so far in a competition filled with a number of very strong sides. Positively, all of the girls will still be at school next year, when they will hope to go at least one stage further.

Well done to all of the girls’ on their spirited showing on the day - especially captain Bethany McDowell and top try scorer Annie McKirgan - as well as their ever-dedicated coach Ms Karen Kirk, without whose expert direction they would not have fared so well.
