Girls’ Tag Rugby Regional Qualifying Round

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s girls’ tag rugby team which achieved victory at the regional qualifying tournament for the Ulster Schools’ Cup 2014.

In total the girls participated in three matches, with the team opening with a steady 2-0 defeat of St. Rose’s Domincan College before fully hitting their stride in a confident 8-0 victory over Mercy College Belfast.

The final match of the day saw GGS pitted against Belfast Royal Academy, with both teams equal on points as well as tries scored prior to the encounter.  Despite form suggesting that B.R.A. would provide Grosvenor with its stiffest challenge thus far, the girls put in a fantastic display of rugby, admired by all in attendance, to come out runway victors by eight tries to one.

The team was led on the day by captain Karen O'Hare, with outstanding rugby also in evidence from experienced players Erin Caughey and Chloe McMaster, as well as new member to the team Bethany McDowell. Well done also to coaches Mr Stuart Smyth and Mrs Karen Kirk whose coaching and enthusiasm were of vital importance in the lead up to the event as well as on the day itself.

The girls will now enter a period of intense training before competing in the quarter-final of the competition later in the month.
