Girls’ Tag Rugby – Ulster Schools’ Cup 2018

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Senior Girls’ Tag Rugby team, which performed superbly to finish as runners-up in the Ulster Schools’ Cup, held in Cookstown on Friday 20th April.

Playing at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena, the girls began the round-robin group stage of the competition with an impressive 4-0 victory over Antrim Grammar School, thanks to tries from Jess Patterson, Anna Stanfield, Holly Brannigan and Fern Wilson, before following this up with an even more convincing 6-0 defeat of Wellington College, with scores coming from Anna Stanfield (2), Fern Wilson (2), Olivia Davidson and Victoria Lloyd.

Following such impressive displays in the group stage the team then progressed to its semi-final, where the girls prevailed by three scores to one in a hard-fought contest against Fivemiletown High School, thus placing them in a much-anticipated final against Enniskillen Royal Grammar.

The first half of the final was a tight affair, as both teams reached half-time at 0-0 following some excellent Grosvenor defence against strong Enniskillen attack. The beginning of the second half proved decisive, however, as Enniskillen scored two early tries to open up a significant lead, before Grosvenor struck back through a superbly taken score by Jess Patterson. Despite a late Enniskillen score handing them eventual victory by a two-score margin, each and every member of the Grosvenor could take huge consolation from a most brave, courageous effort which saw them enjoy territorial ascendancy for long periods of the match.

Well done to Grosvenor’s talented players who represented the team with such distinction on the day, as well as their coach, Mrs Karen Kirk, without whose dedication and commitment the team would not have fared so well.

Let’s hope the girls can build on this success and go one step further this time next year!
