Grosvenor pupils prepare for Glasgow ‘14

Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School pupils Emma Ludlow and Sarah Beck, both Lower 6th, each of whom have been selected to participate as members of the Northern Ireland squad at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Table Tennis player Emma will compete as a member of the four-person womens’ team in both the singles and doubles competitions.  Emma, who is a member of Glenburn Table Tennis Club and trains for approximately twelve hours per week at Glenburn Methodist Church, hit the headlines earlier in the year when she defeated many more established stars to claim gold at the Irish National Senior Table Tennis Championships, held in Limerick in March. Following this success Emma also helped the Northern Ireland team to second place at a Commonwealth Invitational Team Event, held in Scotland in April, and has now gone one better by securing her place at the Games themselves.

For Sarah, her selection to compete as one of six members of Northern Ireland’s Gymnastics team comes following a busy year in which she has enjoyed success at a range of competitions and trained for up to thirty six hours a week at the Salto Gymnastics Centre in Lisburn.  Her hours of dedication have now paid off with the achievement of her ultimate goal and her progress at the Games will be followed closely by all within Grosvenor.

In addition, former Grosvenor pupil Michael Dawson has also been celebrating following his selection to compete as a member of Northern Ireland’s swimming team for a second time.  Having previously participated at the Dehli Games in 2010, Michael will this time contest the 50, 100 and 200 metres Breaststroke events, as well as the 4x100 Medley team relay.  Michael’s selection comes following his achievement of the automatic qualifying time for the 50 metres breastroke at the Irish National Championships earlier in the year.  Since last August Michael has also been training in Dubai with ‘Hamilton Aquatics’, a squad of elite swimmers who have helped Michael to achieve of his best thanks, in part, to a rigorous schedule of ten pool and three gym sessions per week.

All at Grosvenor wish Emma, Sarah and Michael the best of luck at the Commonwealth Games 2014, which run from 23rd July to the 3rd of August, and look forward to following their fortunes throughout the event, as well as over the years to come.
