‘Home Countries Junior Team Golf Championships’ 2014

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Ross Nelson, form four, who played a key role in helping his Belvior Park Under 18 team achieve the runners-up position at the prestigious ‘Home Countries Junior Team Golf Championships’, held at Antequera Golf Club in Spain at the beginning of March.

Playing on a beautiful alpine course deep in the mountains of Andalusia, Ross’ Belvior Park team played solidly throughout the tournament and along the way defeated the Scottish team champions, the Welsh champions and the English champions.   Victory in each of these matches secured the team a berth in the Grand Final, where they came up against the competition’s other Irish team, Mallow Golf Club from near Cork.

Unfortunately Mallow’s standard of play in the final was of such a standard that the Belvior team was defeated comfortably, although its players should take great comfort from an excellent week’s work which secured them second place out of the eight competing teams.

The competition on the whole proved a fantastic, intense and exhausting experience for each of the players involved, especially as they were performing in front of Sky Sports cameras which seemed to be everywhere!  Sky is now due to produce a programme about the championship which will be broadcast in June.

Ross’ participation at the Home Countries Championships came after he, alongside his teammates at Belvior Park, achieved victory in both the Ulster and all-Ireland Fred Daly Championships during the summer of 2013. All at Grosvenor congratulate Ross on his superb series of performances over the past twelve months and look forward to following his continued development on the greens and fairways over the years to come.
