I.F.A. Electric Ireland Schools’ Super Festival Day

On Wednesday 12th June Grosvenor was represented by four girls teams at the ‘I.F.A. Electric Ireland Schools’ Super Festival Day’ football tournament, held at Mallusk Playing Fields and featuring over 1200 competitors and 102 teams from schools across Northern Ireland.

Grosvenor entered one team for each year group: 8-11. The competition was a 7-a-side format with each team comprising ten players in total.

The interest in football amongst the girls this year was substantial - with over 80 pupils turning out for the five weeks of training sessions after school. Forty girls were eventually selected to represent the School

the Year 11 team was one match away from qualifying for the quarter finals but lost out to a very good team from St. Cecilia's, and ended as runners-up in their group, for a second year running. The Year 10 team also played well but didn't get the rub of the green in a few games, with a final whistle winning goal being denied in their first match. In addition, the Year 9 and Year 8 teams were in very tough groups but showed great determination to compete, with the Year 8s gaining a morale-boosting 6-0 win over Laurelhill Community College in their final game.

Special mention goes to Lauren Smyth, from Year 11, and captain Grace McKimm, who scored 6 goals. The Year 10 team saw outstanding performances from captain Helen Osborne, while Eva Wainwright led the Year 9 team with distinction. The Year 8s saw both Liberty Molloy and Rhian Weatherup display great talent, with Rhian scoring 6 goals.

All 40 girls enjoyed a great experience and opportunity to further their football skills.
