Irish Schools' Table Tennis Team Championships 2019

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Under 13 boys’ table tennis team which recently performed superbly to secure a bronze medal at the Irish Schools' Table Tennis Team Championships 2019, held in Dublin at the beginning of May.

The competition saw Grosvenor’s six Under 13 representatives make their way to the National Arena in Dublin to compete against teams from Munster, Connacht and Leinster for the title of All-Ireland Champions. The team’s participation at this prestigious event came following victory at the Ulster Schools' Team Championships in March, but in order to have the strongest possible team at the event, a play-off took place in April between three of the School’s B players and 3 of the A players for places on the final team. The boys who were ultimately selected to represent both Grosvenor and Ulster at the event were: Ben Watson, Euan Hanna, Alfie Stone, Rory Doyle, Junior Close and Thomas Norman; six very talented players.

Upon arrival at the National Arena, Grosvenor’s players were informed that they would be facing Leinster in their opening encounter – a daunting task against formidable opposition. What followed was a titanic struggle from the boys, in both the single and doubles matches; the matches lasted a gruelling 2 hours 45 minutes in total and were incredibly nerve-wracking, with many of the matches being closely contested. The boys gave everything they could but, to their huge disappointment, lost out in the doubles matches as Leinster eventually won the tie; the boys played magnificently and never stopped trying, but the Leinster team was just that little bit more skilful. Despite the disappointment of this result, however, the boys soon picked themselves up to defeat Connacht in the third/fourth place play-off. This fixture represented a much easier set of matches and the boys won all their individual matches easily and, subsequently, the tie. The team finished the day having placed third in the All-Ireland Finals; a brilliant result from a superb team.

Well done to all six pupils on their superb achievement at this event; it represented the perfect way to round-off an incredibly successful season for the School’s Table Tennis Club, under the direction of teacher Mrs Peel, with previous successes having come at the Ulster Schools’ Team and Individual Championships earlier in the year.

We look forward to Grosvenor’s table tennis players maintaining their high standards again next season.
