Junior Certificate Prize-giving Ceremony 2017

The morning of Tuesday 27th June saw Grosvenor stage one of its calendar highlights in the form of the annual Junior Certificate Prize-giving Ceremony, held for all pupils in Years Eight to Eleven in the School’s William Moles Hall.

The ceremony provides an opportunity for the School to celebrate academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular success amongst its Junior School pupils each year. As well as all members of Year Ten receiving their Junior Certificates in recognition of their achievements in the recent end-of-year summer examinations, notable awards were also distributed in acknowledgement of pupils’ achievements in the fields of, amongst others: Sport, Drama, the Environment and Home Economics.

This year’s ceremony offered the opportunity to recognise a number of significant achievements within the School, as evidenced by Year Nine pupil Dylan McBride receiving the ‘Year 9 Boys Individual Cross Country Champion’ award, as well as the ‘Individual Prize for Athletics in Junior School’ following his first place finishes, in the Minor Boys category, at both the Ulster and Irish Schools Cross Country Championships during February and March, as well as the Ulster and Irish Track and Field Championships in May and June;

Year Nine pupils Lucy Milhench, Louisa Millar, Olivia Millar and Alicia Gallagher also received the ‘Digital DNA: Digital Futures Award’ as winners of this prestigious competition in November and, finally, Year Ten pupils Craig Ennis, Knox Wilson and David Dugan took receipt of the ‘Sentinus Young Innovators Award’ which earned them a trip to represent Northern Ireland at the 2018 national ‘Big Bang’ competition, held in Birmingham in March.

Following an informative speech from the School’s Principal Dr Frances Vasey, which detailed the extensive achievements of pupils within junior school over the past year, the ceremony was concluded with an engaging and inspirational talk from Guest Speaker Mr Robin Mercer, owner of Hillmount Garden Centre, who captivated all present whilst talking about his career as well as offering advice regarding success and, specifically, the qualities and sacrifices required in order to achieve it.

Many thanks to Mr Mercer for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak at this year’s ceremony; his wise words will no doubt have inspired many of those pupils present to aspire for further success over the coming years. Well done also to each of those pupils whose achievements were recognised at this year’s event; the School now looks forward to celebrating further Junior School successes for the academic year 2017/2018 this time next year.
