Junior Certificate Prize-giving Ceremony 2018

The morning of Tuesday 26th June saw Grosvenor stage one of its calendar highlights in the form of the annual Junior Certificate Prize-giving Ceremony, held for all pupils in Years Eight to Ten in the School’s William Moles Hall.

The ceremony provides an opportunity for the School to celebrate academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular successes amongst its Junior School pupils each year. As well as all members of Year Ten receiving their Junior Certificates in recognition of their achievements in the recent end-of-year summer examinations, notable awards were also distributed in acknowledgement of pupils’ achievements in the fields of, amongst others: Sport, Drama, the Environment and Home Economics.

This year’s ceremony offered the opportunity to recognise a number of significant achievements within the School, as evidenced by Year Ten pupil Dylan McBride receiving the ‘Year 10 Boys Individual Cross Country Champion’ award and the ‘Individual Prize for Athletics in Junior School’, following his first place finishes at the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships in February, as well as both the Ulster and Irish Track and Field Championships, held in May and June. In addition Dylan’s classmate Jenna Breen was acknowledged for her achievements by being awarded the ‘Individual Prize for Girls Athletics in Junior School’ following her double victory, in the 100 metre and 200 metre sprints, at this year’s Ulster Schools’ Athletics Championships, followed by two silvers at the Irish Championships a fortnight later. Elsewhere, amongst other recipients of awards were Olivia Millar, who was allocated the ‘Home Economics Cup for Exellence’; Megan Ashfield, who picked up the ‘Environmental Awareness Cup’; Lloyd Fernando, who received ‘The Browne Cup for Excellence’ and Lloyd Andrews, who was awarded the prestigious ‘Friends of Grosvenor Year 10 Shield’.

Following an informative speech from the School’s Principal Dr Frances Vasey, which detailed the extensive achievements of pupils within junior school over the past year, the ceremony was concluded with an engaging and inspirational talk from Guest Speaker Ms Joanne Bunting, MLA for East Belfast and a former Grosvenor pupil, who captivated all present whilst talking about her own memories of Grosvenor, as well as offering advice regarding success and, specifically, the qualities and sacrifices required in order to achieve it.

Many thanks to Ms Bunting for taking time out of her busy schedule to speak at this year’s ceremony; her wise words will no doubt have inspired many of those pupils present to aspire for further success over the coming years. Well done also to each of those pupils whose achievements were recognised at this year’s event; the School now looks forward to celebrating further Junior School successes, for the academic year 2018/2019, this time next year.
