London 'Mini Marathon' selection

Congratulations to Grosvenor athletes Dylan McBride and Andrew Hagen, each of whom have been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the London ‘Mini Marathon’, which will be held on the same day as the London Marathon itself – Sunday 23rd April.

Andrew’s selection to the Northern Ireland team came after he finished fourth at the County Down District Cross Country Championships, held at Kilbroney Park in February, followed by 20th at the Ulster Championships in Mallusk just two weeks later. As the fifth Year Eleven pupil to cross the line in the Intermediate category, however, Andrew claimed his place in the N.I. team for the mini marathon, as one of the top six Year Eleven finishers within the race.

In Dylan’s case, meanwhile, his selection came after he gained victory, in the Minor Boys’ category, at the County Down District and Ulster Championships respectively; an incredible double which became a triumphant triple when he added victory at the ‘Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools’ Cross Country Championships’ 2017 in Mallusk on Saturday 11th March.

As members of the Northern Ireland team in the Under 15 and Under 17 categories respectively, Dylan and Andrew will travel over to London on Saturday 22nd April in time for their race the following day. The mini marathon is five kilometres long, finishing on the very scenic Buckingham Palace Mall, just like the professional athletes in the main race.

To attain selection to compete in this event is a massive achievement for both Dylan and Andrew as the race will include only the best athletes from across the United Kingdom; all at GGS wish them the best of luck for this race and look forward to following their fortunes closely on Sunday 23rd April.
