Magnificent Medallion secure Shield success

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Medallion rugby squad which secured its place in the quarter-finals of the 2014 Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield following a hard-fought victory over Coleraine Academical Institution on Saturday 1st February.

The fourth round tie, staged at Grosvenor, promised much from two highly-fancied teams and certainly did not fail to deliver, with both sides giving their all despite the extreme weather conditions.  Grosvenor’s first half performance, with a strong wind behind them, certainly did not see the team perform to its peak, with the players uncertain at times of when to kick and use the conditions to their advantage. Despite this, good pressure relatively early in the half saw centre Daniel Martin capitalise on a charged down Coleraine kick to touch down for a try which was converted by scrum-half Conor Kerhohan for a 7-0 lead which was maintained until half-time.

With the wind now against them Grosvenor began the second half fully aware that a huge performance was required to maintain their slender advantage.  A C.A.I. penalty soon reduced the deficit to a nervy 7-3 but following this the Grosvenor pack performed magnificently, keeping the ball tight and reducing the opportunity for their opponents to use the conditions to gain territory.  Likewise some superb set-piece play kept Coleriane at bay, with hooker Jack Mahon in particular impressing with his lineout throwing.  Indeed it was from one such lineout, deep into the half, that Grosvenor secured clean ball before driving over the opposition line for flanker Taylor Pollock to score and extend the margin to a more assured 12-3.  Following this hammer-blow of a score the team soaked up some immense Coleraine pressure, with centre Thomas Quinn the standout performer in what was an outstanding defensive display from one to fifteen, to prevail and earn their place in the final eight of the competition.

Well done to each member of the Grosvenor squad, as well as coaches Andrew Gibson, Stephen Smyth, Daniel Bowden and Andrew McConville, each of whom have helped the team to improve steadily and impressively over the course of the season; they now await with anticipation the draw for the quarter-finals of this year’s competition, which will be played on Saturday 15th February.
