Medallion Bowl Semi-Final victory

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Medallion Rugby squad which booked its place in this year’s Medallion Bowl Final following a hard-fought victory over Portadown College on the afternoon of Tuesday 10th February.

Early dominance by the GGS pack created time and space for the backs, and before long the team had opened up a convincing 20-0 lead thanks to well worked tries from Number Eight Ben Davies and centre Ethan Fitzsimmons, sandwiched between a brace of penalties from out-half Jos McConkey.

Despite a generally excellent first half performance, however, the team suffered a setback in the final minute before half-time when winger Ben Stevenson was harshly sin-binned.  This temporary reduction in GGS personnel was quickly exploited by Portadown College after the break as they moved the ball wide to make use of the extra space. Three tries in a fifteen minute period put huge pressure on the Grosvenor defence but a quick tap penalty by scrum-half Dan Whitcroft caught the Portadown defence napping and Ben Davies went over in the corner for his second try of the day to ease the pressure on his team.

In a nervous finale Grosvenor held out for a deserved 25-22 victory to book their place in the final of the competition against Coleraine Academical Institution, which will be held on Saturday 28th February at Antrim Grammar School.

Well done to all members of the squad, as well as coaches Mr Andrew White, Mr Ross Jackson and Mr Stuart Smyth, and we wish them all the best of luck for next week’s final.
