Medallion Shield Fourth Round vs Portora Royal

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Medallion rugby team which contested a close-fought draw against Portora Royal School in the third round of the ‘Danske Bank Ulster Medallion Shield’ on the morning of Saturday 17th January.

Grosvenor, quarter-finalists in the competition last year, performed commendably to reach half-time on level terms - with the scoreboard untroubled - despite playing with a strong wind into their faces for most of the first half.

Despite the conditions handing Grosvenor a distinct advantage heading into the second half, however, they consistently failed to convert this into territory and were forced to play most of the match’s final thirty minutes in their own half.  Given this it was unsurprising when some sloppy defending led to a Portora penalty within kicking range, which was duly converted to leave GGS trailing heading into the game’s final quarter.  While many teams would have struggled to come back from such a blow, however, it is credit to the players that they recovered themselves to pull level in the final minutes of the encounter, with centre Joss McConkey superbly converting a high-pressure kick, aided by a following wind, to secure a replay at Portora on Tuesday 27th January.

Well done to all of the players who contributed to Grosvenor’s draw on the day -  especially second-row forward Ewan Renfrew who was the team’s standout performer throughout the match - as well as coaches Mr Andrew White, Mr Ross Jackson and Mr Stuart Smyth who have worked tirelessly with the squad throughout the season.  The winners of the replay will be rewarded with a home fixture against either B.R.A. or Regent House in the fourth round of the competition, with all at Grosvenor hoping that its players can prevail against Portora at the second time of asking.
