‘Milk It’ Track and Field County Down District Athletics Championships 2016

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s male and female athletes who represented the school with distinction at the ‘Milk It’ Track and Field County Down District Athletics Championships, held over two days on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 12th May.

In the girls’ events standout GGS performances came from Lois Hagen, who was victorious in the Senior Girls’ 400 metres in an impressive time of 62.1 seconds, and Emma Kee, who prevailed in the Junior Girls’ Hammer with a distance of 26.30 metres. In addition, impressive displays were also produced by Lucy Armstrong (2nd, Senior Girls’ 200 metres), Anna Stanfield (2nd, Inter Girls’ High Jump; 3rd, Triple Jump), Rhianna Buick (2nd, Junior Girls’ shot), Sarah McCreery (2nd, Mini Girls’ High Jump), Tia Cashman-Hooke (3rd, Junior Girls’ 75 metres hurdles) and Leah Scates (3rd, Mini Girls’ Long Jump).

In the boys’ events, meanwhile, Dylan McBride, winner of the Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championships earlier in the year, again came home in first place, this time in the Mini Boys’ 800 metres with an outstanding time of 2.20.94, while at Junior level both Andrew Hagan and and Joshua Patterson were also victorious, this time in the 1500 metres and Hammer respectively. In the Inter Boys' category, meanwhile, Nathan Chan (Triple Jump) and James McMaster (Hammer) also claimed gold while in the Senor age group Adam Wilson came home in first place in a time of 11.87 seconds. 

As well as these individual winners, GGS’s male relay teams also enjoyed a great deal of success over the two days, with the Minor Boys’ team of Lewis Hamilton, Nathan Stewart, Joseph McNaughton and Adam Sykes claiming first place with a time of 52.02s, a feat emulated by both the Junior Boys’ team of Chris Mamwa, Reece Lawson, Ethan Crawford and Fynn Bailie (49.87s), as well as the Senior Boys’ quartet of Ben Stevenson, Andrew Proctor, Chris Allen and Adam Wilson (46.89s).  

Finally, other GGS male podium achievers over the two days included: Robbie Duggan (3rd, Mini Boys’ 100 metres; 2nd, Long Jump), Ben Johnston (3rd, Mini Boys’ Long Jump), Nathan Stewart (3rd, Minor Boys’ 100 metres), Fynn Bailie (2nd, Junior Boys’ 200 metres), Steven Wright (2nd, Junior Boys’ 800 metres), Chris Allen (3rd, Senior Boys’ 200 metres) and Andrew Proctor (2nd, Senior Boys’ 400 metres).

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s athletes who performed so well at the District Championships, as well as their coaches, led by Mr Andrew Gibson on the male side and Mrs Karen Kirk for the girls; all of the School’s qualifiers will now look to repeat their success at the Ulster Schools’ Championahip, which will be held at The Antrim Forum on Saturday 21st May.
