Minor and Junior District Athletics Championships

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Junior Boys’ athletics team which finished as overall winners at the County Down District Championships, held at the Mary Peters Track on Thursday 8th May.

Overall success in the team event came following gold medals for Nathan Chan in the triple jump, Ben Stevenson in the long jump, Jonny Little in the sprint hurdles, Joss McConkey in the javelin as well as the boys’ 4x100 metre relay team.  In addition, James McMaster and Aaron Harrison each achieved second place in the hammer and 1500 metres respectively, while bronze medals were attained by Guy Harrison in the hurdles as well as Jake Laverty in the hammer.

Elsewhere, at Minor Boys’ level, Finn Bailie achieved gold with a lightning run in the 100 metres while Ethan Crawford performed superbly to win silver in the long jump.

On the girls’ side, Tia Cashman-Hooke was placed third in the 100 metres with a time of 14.54 seconds while the 4x100 metre relay team of Tia, Caylan Blake, Hollie McGowan and Annabelle Fallows also achieved a bronze medal.  At Junior level, Anna Stanfield was placed second in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.45 metres, as well as third in the 75 metre hurdles, while Lauren Irvine finished third in the shot with a distance of 9.33 metres.

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s competitors on the day, and in particular those medal winners who have now qualified to compete at the Ulster Championships, to be held at the Antrim Forum on Saturday 17th May.

Special praise is of course due to the School’s victorious Junior Boys’ team, and their success in particular bodes well for the remainder of the season, with which we wish them and all of Grosvenor’s athletes the best of luck.
