Northern Ireland Book Awards 2013 - Launch Event

On the afternoon of Friday 22nd November seven fortunate Grosvenor pupils, accompanied by Head of English Mr Kernohan as well as Librarian Mrs Eakins, made the journey to Victoria College Belfast as it staged the launch event for the fifth annual Northern Ireland Book Awards.

The eight short-listed books, which had been voted for by pupils, were announced to an eagerly waiting audience. This year’s chosen books were: ‘A Horse Called Hero’ by Sam Angus, ‘After Tomorrow’ by Gillian Cross, ‘In A Glass Grimmly’ by Adam Gidwitz, ‘Osbert the Avenger’ by CW Hill, ‘Russian Roulette’ by Anthony Horowitz, ‘Sky Hawk’ by Gill Lewis, ‘The Screaming Staircase’ by Jonathan Stroud and ‘Nobody Boy’ by Allen Zadoff.

Niall de Burca, who is recognised as one of Ireland’s finest traditional storytellers, was the guest speaker at the event. Niall is a unique ball of energy whose terrifying tales had the audience on the edge of their seats and on occasion jumping out of them! Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the launch event and are now keen to start reading and voting for their favourite books.

Copies of all eight titles are now available in the School Library for pupils to read and to shadow the Award over the coming months.
