Northern Ireland Book Club Launch

On Wednesday 24th October Grosvenor participated in the ‘Northern Ireland Book Awards’ for the first time, with a number of pupils in Junior School attending the launch event at R.B.A.I.

The whole emphasis of the competition is on books that are exciting and encourage children to read more and the overriding aim is to promote book-centred interaction and debate among young people from all community sectors.

Guest of Honour at the launch event was Joe Craig, the award winning author of the well known Jimmy Coates series. He told the audience about his amusing adventures in America and how he was inspired to begin his writing career. Later he was available to sign copies of his books and to meet and chat with pupils.

As the event drew to a close, all pupils were treated to specially designed chocolate bars that had all the 2012 nominated books printed on the chocolate wrappers. These were very warmly received and provided a unique souvenir of a very memorable day.

Prior to the launch event itself some 16 Grosvenor pupils in forms 1 – 3 forwarded their nominations for the best book of 2012.  Unfortunately none of these suggestions made it into the final eight – but there is always next year!! The School’s Library is now in possession of all of the final 8 shortlisted titles and will be shadowing the award scheme over the next few months until the Grand Finale in March 2013.

Many thanks to Grosvenor’s Librarian Mrs Heather Eakins for organizing the School’s involvement in this most worthwhile competition.
